Promoting Environmental Literacy through a Student Film Festival

Part of ClearShark H2O’s mission is to revitalize youth engagement in Maryland’s waterways by offering hands-on experiences to students of all ages. This initiative pairs perfectly with Broadneck High School’s Environmental Literacy Signature Program and for the past two years ClearShark H2O has supported our Signature Program in many ways. Most notably, ClearShark H2O provided support and assisted in the planning of our first ever Environmental Literacy Film Festival, designed to showcase student film shorts with an environmental focus. This county-wide event allows middle and high school student filmmakers the opportunity to showcase their work while bringing attention to local issues. Mrs. Nichole Bentz, ClearShark H2O’s Executive Director, coordinated numerous planning sessions for the film festival and ensured that all student filmmakers were able to receive prizes.

Even beyond the film festival, ClearShark H2O continues to support Broadneck High School’s environmental literacy initiatives by coordinating opportunities for environmental enrichment and developing programming for our students and staff. When asked about ClearShark H2O’s investment in our schools, Ms. Bentz said, “We feel that it is important to support AACPS because there are so many environmental educational opportunities available to our students that they may not be aware of or have the resources or means in which to take advantage of.  We want to make sure AACPS students are aware of the environmental educational opportunities we provide and we also want to make the opportunities a reality for them!”

Moving forward, Broadneck High School’s goal is to deepen this partnership and allow more students the opportunity to engage in hands-on experiences through guest speaking engagements and field experiences.
