Nicole Hughes
I am an AACPS: Teacher, Windsor Farm Elementary School | 2016 Teacher of the Year Nominee
As I reflect on my seventeen years of teaching, I have come to realize that my philosophy of teaching can not be summarized into one word or phrase. It is a belief, a passion, and a responsibility. It is dynamic, engaging, and most of all an honor.
As a teacher, my belief is strong in having an atmosphere that fosters learning. My students know that I love my job and that I care for them. It is my belief, that every student that walks through my door feels loved and that each one knows that I believe in them.
Working with my students is my passion. I set high expectations and help them strive to reach them. When I set high standards, my students work harder to achieve them. I encourage mastery of concepts being taught and critical thinking. I want my students to be risk takers, problem solvers, and lifelong learners. I must be passionate about what I do if I want my students to achieve my expectations, be successful, and love school.
It is my responsibility to teach the required concepts and skills, but also a responsibility to provide future teachers with successful, hard working, and respectful students. It is my responsibility to keep my students safe when they walk through the door each day. It is my responsibility to foster a love of learning and an “I can” attitude in my students. Teaching is dynamic. It is ever changing and I must embrace change and be innovative in my planning. I will always continue to incorporate new ideas and practices into my lessons. I must continue to further my own education to learn how to differentiate and plan engaging lessons.
When I was a little girl, I realized early on that I wanted to “be” a teacher. This profession is an honor to hold. I am shaping young minds, making a difference in their young lives, and helping to make a contribution to our world.
