I am an AACPS: Special Education Teacher, Crofton Middle School | 2018 Teacher of the Year Nominee
My teaching philosophy is based upon a question for myself. What kind of legacy do I want to leave behind? I want to leave a positive mark on this world and make it a better place for my children. Michael Jackson’s song, “Man in the Mirror,” resonates with me. Change starts with me and I chose teaching as my profession because I want to make a difference in the lives of others not only today but for decades to come. There is no greater joy than to know you inspired someone to be a better person, helped someone realize their potential or believe in themselves. I also believe teachers are like doctors. We are hired to educate like doctors are hired to treat illness. However, there is so much more to what we do. Similar to doctors I must examine the whole child and know the whole child. I must know the background and the circumstances in which a child lives. Doctors must have a full picture of the patient and know the background in order to diagnose and treat a disorder or condition. Doctors are constantly problem solving to find out a cause and then treat a patient effectively. Teachers must work in the same mindset. I must understand my students, identify concerns, diagnose the areas of difficulty and problem solve for solutions. I cannot give up when there are obstacles in the way. I believe students and teachers work most effectively when mutual respect is shared. The type of classroom I encourage is where all students feel safe and secure. Learning can take place when each person feels respected and loved. I learn from my students as much as they learn from me. I am truly blessed to have the opportunity to work with young people. I am thankful to be working in a field where I can make a difference in the world.
