I am a: Math Teacher, Mary Moss @ J. Albert Adams Academy | 2016 Teacher of the Year Nominee
Throughout the entire time that I have been teaching, I have had an affinity for those students that were not as educationally motivated. I did my student teaching in an inner city middle school and loved the idea of helping those students see the relevance of getting an education. It was and still is my mission that every student can exceed everyone’s expectations given the appropriate environment and support so that they can become successful contributing members of society.
I have always thought that throughout a student’s life there should always be one constant and the safety and security of my classroom is definitely part of this situation. Students need to have a person that is caring and still expecting them to follow the structure and stability. My philosophy is that every student can achieve their goals and still thrive. The students that are my favorites are those that are not school oriented originally. It is exciting to stoke the fires of education in their lives so that they can succeed in life. Making sure that the students have knowledge of their requirements and that they have the motivation and means to achieve their goals and desires.
My students need more caring and help due to their social and emotional issues than an average student. It is so exciting to watch them grow into more contributing members of society and actually start to understand the importance of an education to furthering their abilities as adults. Many of my students struggle to come to school or struggle in their studies and my job is to close the gaps in the education while still maintaining the course structure that they are working on getting credit for graduation. With the differentiated instruction techniques, technology components and a wonderful learning environment, my students achieve more than they have ever. This basic knowledge helps my students become better prepared to continue on with their education and succeed as an adult.
