Ariyanna, Grade 8
I am an AACPS: Student, Bates Middle School
In the fifth grade, my school Tyler Heights had a program called S.E.L.F which still continues now. This program helps young girls to gain determination, and self-confidence. I learned a lot from that program, and go there almost every Friday to see the new S.E.L.F girls. My favorite teachers are Ms. Bradshaw (Behavioral Intervention Specialist) and Mrs. Dillard (Parent Volunteer).
What is the S.E.L.F. Program?
S.E.L.F. is an empowerment program for 5th grade girls designed to encourage self-awareness, self-confidence, self-determination, self-worth, and self-sacrifice. We meet with the girls most Fridays for 2 1/2 hours afterschool. During this time they participate in experiential learning activities, self-discovery projects, and team building challenges. Each year the girls participate in a “Day in the Life” collegiate experience at Morgan State University and create PSA’s focusing on Girl Power.
