I am an AACPS: Parent, Benfield Elementary School | Volunteer
As a mother who had children later in life, I have looked for every possible opportunity to interact with my children in elementary school. I have been a room mom, served on the board of the PTA, assisted with everything from copying to committees, been on field trips, and everything in between.
But my most rewarding experience comes once a year on Grandparent’s/Senior Friends Day at Benfield Elementary School. I have served as the refreshment coordinator, which encompasses providing breakfast snacks, coffee, water, fruit, etc. But what makes it so rewarding is the pure joy of the grandparent’s/senior friends to be able to interact with their grandchildren. Each and every grandparent shared happiness at being included in class projects, whether in Art, PE, music or a core subject. The grandparents/seniors were truly just happy to be there and the kids were so excited to show off for them. While it is always nice when the parents come, it is a completely different feel for the grandparents. The children were much more patient to their grandparents and the grandparents really were thrilled with every single aspect of the day. Truly a wonderful experience for all and I am grateful that for the past 4 years, I have been able to share it with them all.
