AACPS STUDENT AWARDED COLLEGE-FUNDED NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP

With more students likely to be named, Severna Park High School senior Julia Downing is the sixth county student to be announced as a scholarship recipient by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

In support of furthering her studies in biomedical engineering next year, Downing’s college-sponsored award ranges between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the University of Maryland College Park.

Students earn the honor based on excellent academic records, standardized test performances, school and community leadership, essay submissions, and high school recommendations.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation will announce more winners this summer.  In all, more than $35 million will be awarded to nearly 8,000 outstanding high school seniors in this year’s competition.
