BOARD OF EDUCATION TO RECEIVE UPDATE ON GENERAL ASSEMBLY LEGISLATION, VOTE ON SIX POLICY REVISIONS

The Board of Education of Anne Arundel County will receive an update on the progress of education-related legislation in the General Assembly and vote on changes to six policies at its next meeting, scheduled for 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 18, 2015. The meeting will be held in the Board Room at the Parham Building, located at 2644 Riva Road in Annapolis.

In addition to adopting its 2015 Legislative Program, which lays out the Board’s stance on key issues before legislators each year, the Board has taken official positions on a host of bills introduced during this session. Board Members will be updated on where bills are in the adoption process and informed of any amendments to bills since positions were taken.

Among the policies on which the Board will vote are ones governing the eligibility of students who ride school buses as well as student transportation. The policies have been reviewed by the Board twice before. The administrative regulation that accompanies the bus rider eligibility policy (Policy EAA) would provide transportation for students who receive out-of-area transfers for daycare with a documented hardship. Such students are currently ineligible for bus transportation.

The Board will meet on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. to vote to go into closed session, during which time it will discuss confidential matters as permitted by the Maryland Open Meetings Act including, but not limited to, legal advice, personnel, and negotiations. Closed session is not open to the public. The general session of the meeting, which is open to the public, will begin at 7 p.m.

A complete agenda for the meeting accompanies this news release. More information on agenda items will be posted on the AACPS website in the Board Docs section under the Board of Education tab.

The general session of Wednesday’s Board meeting will be broadcast live on AACPS-TV, which can be found on Channel 96 on Comcast and Broadstripe, and Channel 36 on Verizon. High definition broadcasts can be seen on Channel 996 on Comcast and Channel 496 on Broadstripe. Rebroadcasts are scheduled for 7:00 p.m. the day after the meeting and 2:00 p.m. on subsequent Sundays.
