Interim Superintendent Mamie J. Perkins today announced her intention to appoint Dr. Kathryn L. Kubic as Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction, following the resignation this morning of Greg Pilewski. Mrs. Perkins will ask the Board to approve the appointment at its next meeting on June 18, 2014.
Pilewski has served as Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction since November 2013. He submitted his resignation this morning, citing the need to tend to personal and family matters. The resignation takes effect June 30.
“This was a very difficult decision for me because I was very much looking forward to working with new Superintendent George Arlotto and continuing the difficult but rewarding work in which we are engaged as a school system,” Pilewski said today. “There are times in every person’s life, however, where other matters must take precedence. This is simply one of those times.”
Mr. Pilewski has worked in Anne Arundel County Public Schools since 2006, all of it in the Division of Curriculum & Instruction.
“I want to thank Greg for his work with our school system and his leadership of the division over the last year,” Mrs. Perkins said. “The world in which Greg and his team work is changing rapidly, and he has capably steered the ship through some rough waters. While I am saddened at Greg’s departure, I understand his reasons and wish him nothing but the best in the future.”
Dr. Kubic, whose appointment will take effect on June 25, has worked in the school system since 1987. She began her AACPS career as a math teacher and held positions as coordinator of math and assistant principal before serving as principal at Old Mill and Northeast high schools. She has overseen the Instructional Data Division since 2012.
“Kathy Kubic is one of the brightest educators I know,” Mrs. Perkins said. “She has been a key force in the data-driven decisions we have made as we seek to move our school system forward. She also has been integrally involved in our work to implement the new testing methods that will come online across our system next year, and the new teacher and principal evaluations. Those elements and her familiarity with the curricular changes that have been made in our system make her the perfect choice for this position.”
