Bethany Siwajek

I am an AACPS: AVID Site Coordinator, Marley Middle School | 2018 Teacher of the Year Semi-Finalist

Bethany SiwajekLearning became my passion at a very young age.  My parents helped me in developing my vocabulary and reading skills before I even started pre-school.  This early exposure to education led to my falling in love with learning.  This passion is and always will be the foundation of my teaching style.

To instill this same passion for learning in my students, I build relationships with students and guide them in building relationships with each other.  It demonstrates to them that I am invested in their learning.  Frequent team building activities develop trust and a sense of community within the classroom.  I utilize this positive climate to engage all students in real-word, rigorous, and college-readiness lessons.  These real-world opportunities scaffold learning for all students to prepare them to be 21st Century Learners.

Being passionate for learning and teaching is not limited to my classroom.  I demonstrate this passion during collaborative planning by learning from my colleagues as well as sharing useful ideas with them.  I believe in expanding my knowledge and resources by attending professional development opportunities at my school, within the county, and conferences at the state or even national level.

I believe that all good teachers are involved outside of their classroom.  On the night of an evening school event, you will find me there supporting the students.  It is important for students to know that I am invested in them as a person with diverse interests and not just in the classroom.  I attend sporting events, drama shows, and music concerts to name a few.  At these events, you will find me interacting with students, parents, and community members.  According to the ancient African proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child”, I truly believe that education is a partnership, and that “village” is the school community of teachers, staff, parents, family, and members of the community.  Together, we will prepare all students for a rich future and a passion for learning.
