I am a: Pre-Kindergarten Teacher, Freetown Elementary School | 2016 Teacher of the Year Nominee

My Philosophy of Education is practiced and applied in the same manner today as it was thirty years ago when I first started teaching. I have taught Prekindergarten through second grade and through my experiences, I sincerely believe that my philosophy applies to all children. Believing that all children must feel safe and nurtured, I take all the time necessary to have meaningful relationships with my students. I accept full responsibility for high quality job performance. Children are unique and amazing and their varied developmental abilities are all different as well. Potential for growth and achievement is present in all children. Incorporating the Social Emotional Curriculum is a vital part of the Prekindergarten program.

Once a child feels confident, academic progress can take place.

Modeling, inspiring, encouraging, being consistent, and having daily routines in place are a must. Organization is a major point as well, but I realize this doesn’t always happen, especially with 4-year olds! The ability to be flexible is extremely important. Discipline is important and a key factor, but I don’t agree that the interpretation most people have with it is correct. Discipline is derived from the Latin word “disciplinare,” to teach. Teaching with effective discipline should always be demonstrated in a very positive manner. Yes, to teach with love and respect is a classroom requirement in my classroom. My mother was not an educator, however, she was my first teacher. She disciplined with love, and I try to do the same in my classroom. If unacceptable choices are made, we find avenues to make it better. I am always in contact with the parent/guardians of my students. We are truly a team…I believe that. Volunteering also enables me to socialize with my families as well. This lets them know they are just as important as their child. Sending a positive message to parents also develops an open line of communication.

I am a positive person who loves to dance, sing and laugh! My students participate actively, explore, experiment, make choices, and use technology which involves all of the various learning styles. Occupational Therapy research has now proven what I believe to be true and that is “movement” is important for learning. During recess, I practice with my students to use the monkey bars and balance beam to enhance “movement.” I take all the time necessary to plan effectively for the groups I work with and to challenge them as well. My students are aware that giving up is not acceptable. If they get discouraged, I encourage them and reinforce that we will try again tomorrow. Witnessing the smiles on their faces when success has been accomplished is heartwarming and what I look forward to daily!

And finally, yes, I am student too! Taking part on the Equity, PBIS, and SIT teams enables me to interact with my peers and continue to learn. Having new prekindergarten teachers visit my room is a joy. My advice to them is to always be committed, passionate, sensitive, creative, and to always go that “extra mile!” Success will happen at the end of that mile!
