Starting on May 23, 2018, Destination Imagination teams from across the globe will come together to compete in the Global Finals competition, held in Knoxville, Tennessee. Destination Imagination, Inc. is a global, volunteer-led non-profit whose mission is to teach students the creative process and help them gain the 21st century skills needed to succeed in the future workforce, including creative and critical thinking, collaborative problem solving and project management. The teams will present their creative solutions to a number of mind-bending challenges in the fields of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), fine arts and service learning.

To compete in Global Finals these teams must have advanced past Regional and Affiliate (state/country) Tournaments. More than 1400 teams from 45 U.S. states and 14 countries will compete.

The only elementary-level team from Anne Arundel County invited to compete in Global Finals and represent Maryland is the Millersville Masterminds, from Millersville Elementary. The team consists of seven students, ranging from grades 3 to 5. Team Millersville Masterminds will be competing in the Technical Challenge, Maze Craze.

In the Maze Craze challenge the team is required to create a maze traveler that can navigate a random maze, remove an object from the maze, and create a prop that transforms within the maze; all using technical methods. They also had to create, write, and perform a story about the maze traveler’s journey.

“Few Destination Imagination teams get the opportunity to go to Globals. It’s a chance to represent their school, their county, and the state of Maryland on a global stage with thousands of teams from all over the world. It’s an incredible learning opportunity!” said Adam Ashley, Team Manager of the Millersville Masterminds.

“I can’t wait to go to Globals and meet kids from other countries!” said team member Peyton Ashley. “It’s a huge honor to go to Globals with my whole team!” said Anna C.
