I am an AACPS:<\/strong> Parent, Old Mill<\/em> | Volunteer<\/p>\n My name is LaToya Staten. I am an Anne Arundel County Public School Parent. I am an African American woman. I am a single mother. I work full-time. And I volunteer.<\/p>\n My sons are rising students in the International Baccalaureate Middle Year and Diploma Programs at Old Mill. I believe that a child\u2019s education is a contact team sport.\u00a0I come from a long history of parental involvement in schools. My parents were active in my education and I am very active in my boys\u2019 education.<\/p>\n My involvement with Anne Arundel County Public Schools started in 2007 when my family relocated here from Michigan. In the past nine years, I have volunteered in many capacities in AACPS. In the early days, I was a room mother and Sportstacking coach at Jacobsville Elementary. My \u201cfriend-raising\u201d capabilities allowed me to plan and execute three out of state stacking competitions that included more than 30 AACPS children and 10 parents traveling to Colorado, Pennsylvania, and Texas. I also started a \u201cBoys, Breakfast, and Books\u201d Club for fourth and fifth graders at Jacobsville in 2012. As my sons got older, I became more interested in policy and volunteered on the Equity Team at Chesapeake Middle School. I am currently involved in the AACPS Citizens Advisory Committee, and the Equity Subcommittee. I also chaperone field trips and donate to special events when my busy schedule allows me to do so.<\/p>\n My story is simple. It is one of love and commitment. I am committed to making a difference in the lives of my children, their friends, their teachers, and our environment.
