I really think when you find your writers voice and your intention behind your words, it transforms you as a person. I wanted to be in the classroom to facilitate that for learners.

What would you tell yourself about your potential as an educator?

I have the potential to manage being unprepared because, practically speaking, you can never be prepared for teaching. I struggled a lot with thinking that being overprepared, as far as in the theoretical sense, would prepare me to walk into a classroom and engage in relationships with different students and it doesn’t. I would tell myself, you know what buttercup, you can do that. You can connect with these kids

What one thing do you love about working in your school?

The creativity. Everyone is so multifaceted that I feel inspired. I know that sounds super cliche, but I really feel inspired when I engage with these kids and they open up about what they love.

What is your favorite memory of your family and friends supporting you on your journey as an educator?

This is funny. So my granny and mother pulled out this picture of me and it’s my 5th birthday party. I’ve got on that Pizza Hut crown you used to get for reading. They said to me “you know, this is was you what you were made for.”

Thinking about the future of education, what are you most excited about for schools?

I know my students would be upset about this, but bringing back some of that rigor and seeing how the curriculum transforms to meet the new demands of our students as well.

What is one hidden talent you have that no one, or few people, knows about and would surprise them?

I’m thinking of my students. They wouldn’t know that I had some acting experience back in the day, so I can run a line or two. I’ve run a marathon and I am training for another one. Also, I’m actually a published creative writer.

If you had to make a time capsule about this year as a rising star teacher and you had to include an item, an image, a quote and a song/melody, what would you include?

The item is my class pet, a stuffed rat. The quote would be from Octavia Butler, “All that you and I’m looking at my wall now, all that you touch, you change all that, you change changes you.” The song from the Wiz, “Ease on down the road.”

What is one reason why someone should choose to become a teacher?

There is no reason. It has to be personal. It has to be something that you personally resonate with, because there’s no generic answer. So if you have it in you and you feel the slightest bud that this is what you wanna do, water it, give it some sun and go with it.

Louis Nesbitt, PDM Department

LNesbitt@aacps.org

The journey of an educator is a lifetime.
