I was encouraged by people I interacted while I was in college. So I’d say, “you’ve got this and you’ve had this.”

What one thing do you love about working in your school?

I have a really supportive team, but I also feel supported everywhere in the building. They’ve helped me working outside of my comfort zone to get better as a teacher and a person. The parents are very supportive and engaged as well.

What is your favorite memory of your family and friends supporting you on your journey as an educator?

At the end of last year when I was presented the opportunity to apply to become a teacher, I called my family to ask their opinions. For me I felt a little pressure because I’m a first generation college graduate, so I thought I had to dream bigger in terms of what the world thinks. I told them I wanted to be a teacher and they cheered me on and encouraged me to go forward and be the best I can be.

Thinking about the future of education, what are you most excited about for schools?

I am excited about the push for equity and working towards closing gaps for the students.

What is one hidden talent you have that no one, or few people, knows about and would surprise them?

I write poetry, but my special thing is I am really good at sports. I just pick up really quickly. For example I love rugby and fencing. I also like track and field and I won a competition throwing the shot put.

If you had to make a time capsule about this year as a rising star teacher and you had to include an item, an image, a quote and a song/melody, what would you include?

As the item, Seven the Lion our class talking piece. The quote, “Your feelings are valid, but so are my rules.” My first Unity Day picture with my students is definitely the picture and the class’ good morning song is the melody.

What is one reason why someone should choose to become a teacher?

It is the most rewarding job there is. Yes the students can be challenging sometimes, but it’s worth it. It’s about the long game and seeing the students grow.

Louis Nesbitt, PDM Department

LNesbitt@aacps.org

The journey of an educator is a lifetime.
