{"id":20150,"date":"2020-08-04T15:36:44","date_gmt":"2020-08-04T19:36:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/aacpsschools.org\/development\/?p=20150"},"modified":"2020-08-10T16:38:10","modified_gmt":"2020-08-10T20:38:10","slug":"temaencarnacion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aacpsschools.org\/development\/2020\/08\/04\/temaencarnacion\/","title":{"rendered":"Advocating for Students"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"fusion-one-full fusion-layout-column fusion-column-last fusion-spacing-yes\" style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:20px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper\"><div class=\"fusion-title title fusion-sep-none fusion-title-size-two\"><h2 class=\"title-heading-left\">Tema Encarnacion<\/h2><\/div><h3><strong>I am an AACPS:<\/strong> Teacher, <em>Annapolis High School | 2020 Teacher of the Year Finalist<\/em><\/h3>\n<div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-one-half fusion-layout-column fusion-spacing-yes\" style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:20px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most fundamental roles of an educator is that of an advocate.\u00a0 As an ESOL and GCC teacher, I have a unique perspective and understanding of our educational system. With that, comes a profound responsibility to my students, their families, and my colleagues.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0As an advocate, one of my most important responsibilities is maintaining high expectations for both my students and my colleagues. Over the years, I have seen the transformative power of students seeing themselves through the eyes of educators who believe in their abilities. Because of this, my expectations must also extend to other teachers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Our work as educators is vitally important and we must hold one another accountable to high standards of excellence.\u00a0 This means knowing our students\u2019 backgrounds, educational experiences, and language proficiency and then differentiating our lessons accordingly. It means leveraging students\u2019 strengths rather than only remediating where we may see gaps.\u00a0 As an advocate, I must support and model this for my colleagues while also reflecting on my own teaching.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Advocating is also ensuring that students and their families are able to understand and navigate the opportunities available to their children and eliminating barriers to access in the system.\u00a0 I have become acutely aware of disparities in access to rigorous programming and have worked and will continue to work tirelessly to eliminate this inequity.\u00a0 Because I know how advanced programming can change the trajectory of a student\u2019s life I am fervent in my commitment to promoting this for all students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0I have the unique privilege of working with students from all over the world.
