{"id":13647,"date":"2018-08-02T11:19:13","date_gmt":"2018-08-02T15:19:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/aacpsschools.org\/development\/?p=13647"},"modified":"2019-02-28T15:19:23","modified_gmt":"2019-02-28T19:19:23","slug":"panthers_leaders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aacpsschools.org\/development\/2018\/08\/02\/panthers_leaders\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cThe Mills-Parole Way\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"fusion-one-full fusion-layout-column fusion-column-last fusion-spacing-yes\" style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:20px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper\"><div class=\"fusion-title title fusion-title-size-two\"><h2 class=\"title-heading-left\">Panther Leaders<\/h2><div class=\"title-sep-container\"><div class=\"title-sep sep-double\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><p><strong>We are an AACPS:<\/strong>\u00a0Volunteer Program, <i>Mills-Parole Elementary School &amp; Annapolis High School<\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You might know that the Annapolis High team mascot is the panther. The program at Mills-Parole is the Panther Leaders because male student athletes from Annapolis High volunteer to work with fifth grade boys. Wearing their team jerseys, these athletes each work with a fifth grader following an Interactive Read Aloud format. They discuss the text as they are reading. Afterward, they have a book discussion. Students also enjoy snacks during this time. Most importantly, they have the opportunity to build a positive relationship with a male role model.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In addition to supporting literacy, the Panthers also address \u201cThe Mills-Parole Way\u201d with the fifth graders. This includes discussing ways to show respect, be responsible, and be ready to learn.<\/p>\n<p>However, the program doesn\u2019t just address literacy and the social needs of the fifth graders. A recent program evaluation given to the high school athletes showed that it was also promoting our value of preparing students to be caring and contributing citizens.
