A group of Annapolis Middle School (AMS) students decided they wanted to know more about the teachers and staff that worked in the school, so they took the initiative and did a series of interviews with some of the teachers and staff they were interested in.

This conversation is with Brittany Hammaker, School Social Worker at Annapolis Middle.

How was your 7th-grade year?

How was 7th grade for me? I remember 7th grade being difficult and I was quite anxious, but it was also enjoyable. I had a lot of friends, so I enjoyed being in school, but at the same time couldn’t wait to get out of school.

What school did you go to in order to be a school social worker?

I went to 3 schools. First, I attended Anne Arundel Community College, then the University of Maryland Baltimore College (UMBC), and finally, the University of Maryland Baltimore and got my clinical degree in social work.

What led you to work at AACPS?

Specifically AACPS? I have always wanted to work in the school system and because I’m a mental health provider, which means I help people, I figured one of the best ways to reach people is through schools. Everyone pretty much goes to school right? So it kind of allows me to reach people on a larger scale.

How many years have you been at Annapolis Middle?

This is my first year at Annapolis Middle School.

Did you work anywhere else before you came to AMS?

Yes! I worked in the Meade/Brooklyn area at several elementary schools and before that I worked for the Children’s Guild.

So what’s the most fun thing about your job here?

The most fun thing about my job here is the students! You guys make me laugh every single day. So many students give me a sense of purpose and being able to help people is important to me.

What is your favorite TV show?

That’s a good one! I don’t know if I can pick a favorite, but I’d say the last show I was really into was Yellowstone!

This is the last question- What is something you like about AMS?

I really like the staff and overall it’s a very positive environment here!

Thank you for answering some questions today, Goodbye!

–This group of students from AACPS organized the interviews and the questions. Mr. Simon Wainwright and Ms. Carolyn Lozano picked up the mantle and helped the students with their endeavors to have more conversations with teachers.
