Laura Currey
I am an AACPS: Teacher, Central Elementary | 2019 Teacher of the Year Honoree
My philosophy of teaching is simple: make connections and strive to be your best self. As teachers, we shoulder great responsibility regarding the impact we have on our students’ lives. Our presence sets the tone and mood of the class, influencing our students lives either positively or negatively, with our attitudes and expectations. Our students need to know we believe in them, by feeling connected to us and motivated to do their best for us and for themselves. They need to feel comfortable with us, knowing we care about them and want the best for them. We make connections with our students by learning about them, both inside and outside of school, showing genuine interest in their lives and encouraging them to be their best selves.
As a special education teacher, I know my students are faced with many challenges. I acknowledge their hard work and empower them to take academic risks. I encourage them to make goals and strive to reach them by teaching them specific strategies that focus on their strengths while targeting their needs. They know that I believe in them and expect their best every day. I teach them to advocate for themselves, by asking for what they need. This is especially important for my fifth graders, because I want to send them to middle school as advocates for their learning.
As a special education resource teacher, I work closely with classroom teachers. They have the hardest job! I know that having special education students in their classes can increase their workload and stress levels. At the beginning of the school year, I reach out to them, thanking them for embracing our students and letting them know that I am here for them and our students. I acknowledge their valiant efforts and offer support to make our special education students successful.
Make connections + strive to be your best self = Success
