I am an AACPS: Teacher, Severna Park Middle School | 2019 Teacher of the Year Honoree
When people inquire about what I do, I quickly respond with, “I’ve got the best job in the world” and I truly believe it. I am so fortunate to be where I am today. I started teaching at the elementary level after receiving my Master’s degree and along the way moved up to middle school where I fell in love with the student population. I was hooked, I was excited. My years of teaching Science lent its self beautifully to teaching Family and Consumer Sciences, FACS. It is not just cooking and sewing, it’s much more! It’s life skills, it’s common sense, it’s nutrition, it’s measuring. It’s knowing the difference between a liquid and a dry measuring cup. It’s about learning how to thread a needle, to sew on a button. It’s knowing the difference between a debit card and a credit card and why you pay your bill in full every month. Over the years I’ve honed my skills of presentation, timing and execution. My teaching philosophy is simple. Make it fun, make it collaborative and make it as hands-on as possible all the while being kind to one another. The students at SPMS work extremely hard in their core classes so I made it my mission to take the pressure off them. It’s my job to make my FACS classes as enjoyable and educational as possible while letting them know, they are not competing against one another. They are learning, making mistakes, redoing, and mastering all while enjoying themselves. Plus, who doesn’t love teaching students who enjoy being excited about being in your classroom. When I heard Dr. Arlotto’s message was to build relationships, it hit home, that’s what I do best. I teach over 300 students each year and by December, I’ll be able to name each one of them and tell you at least one special thing about them. I have a gift to share, and there is no stopping me.
