Broadneck High School & Broadneck Elementary School

We are a: Volunteer Program, Broadneck High School & Broadneck Elementary School | 2019 Exemplary Program

In 2018-2019, Broadneck High School’s National Honors Society (NHS) partnered with Broadneck Elementary School to create the Kindergarten Kindness Society. The program, which builds relationships and provides effective learning opportunities for all students, is truly symbiotic, as all involved parties benefit from the experience. NHS students with partial schedules volunteered to visit Broadneck Elementary School, where they were matched with a kindergarten classroom. High School students gained experience in schools while also meeting their service hour requirements and kindergarten students were provided with a variety of instructional supports. In some instances, the high school volunteers would help Broadneck Elementary’s youngest learners build foundational literacy skills, such as letters, sounds, and rhyming. When working with thriving readers, the volunteers would often read and discuss books to further student’s comprehension.

THE NHS students were enthusiastic and happy to assist Broadneck Elementary’s teachers to support student learning and the kindergarten students were thrilled to have their “friends” in their classrooms. Each day, these young learners eagerly awaited the arrival of the high school students.

Choice, variety, and novelty inspire student learning and growth and the Kindergarten Kindness Society program offers all of the above. The partnership between Broadneck High School and Broadneck Elementary School provides a meaningful and beneficial experience for students from both schools as well as the teachers involved.
