Starting The Adventure in Reading!

 We are an AACPS: Volunteer Program, Severn Elementary School

Stakeholders realize the importance of literacy to future success for our students. Nowhere is this more true than with the dedicated volunteers from Severn Elementary School who lead STAIR–Start The Adventure In Reading. 

STAIR is a proven reading and mentoring program designed to provide early intervention for at-risk second grade students. Students work one-on-one with STAIR tutors twice a week after school for one hour. The program not only works to increase reading fluency and comprehension, it also tries to provide a caring environment to promote each student’s sense of self-worth and esteem. This program truly helps turn reluctant readers into confident and competent lifelong readers.

Severn Elementary’s STAIR program was recognized at the 2018 Volunteer Breakfast as an Exemplary Volunteer Program for supporting student literacy.
