Green Apple Day Of Service
We are an AACPS: Volunteer Program, South Shore Elementary School
We are so fortunate to live in part of the Chesapeake Bay watershed. We are one of six states that share responsibility for the health and well being of this area that plays such a large role in the life of our citizens. South Shore Elementary chose to embrace our role as caregiver to the Bay by using volunteers to help organize a full day of special environmental events called the Green Apple Day Of Service.
This program reinforced lessons about the environment through a variety of subjects. For example, students used art to paint and place a rock for the newly constructed rock garden. The community was involved – A.A.C. Waste Management sent volunteers to discuss the Reduce, Reuse, & Recycle Program. Students even used recycled cardboard milk cartons to make a viewable root planting. And, during lunch, students had the opportunity to watch a video of the terrapin the fifth grade class is raising for release.
The Green Apple Day of Service program was recognized as a 2018 Exemplary Volunteer Program at the annual Volunteer Recognition Tea.
