LATEST ROUND OF APPOINTMENTS MEANS 16 SCHOOLS WILL HAVE NEW PRINCIPALS IN 2013-2014 SCHOOL YEAR

Sixteen schools will be under new leadership in the fall as a result of the latest round of promotions approved and reassignments reviewed today by the Board of Education of Anne Arundel County. Fifteen of the new assignments have been finalized, and at least 10 schools will have leaders in their first year as a principal in Anne Arundel County when school opens in August.

The Board today approved the promotions of three assistant principals to principal positions. Sue Chittim, assistant principal at Glen Burnie High School, was named to succeed Don Lilley as acting principal at Annapolis High School. Dr. Michael Lyons, assistant principal at Meade Middle School, was named to succeed Bill Goodman as principal there. Julie Cares, assistant principal at North County High School, was named to succeed Bill Heiser as principal at that school. Lilley and Goodman are taking positions in the school system’s central office and Heiser is leaving to become principal at Catonsville High School.

The Board has previously reviewed the appointments and approved the promotions of principals at the following schools:

  • Annapolis Elementary, Julia Walsh, formerly assistant principal at Germantown Elementary School
  • Brooklyn Park Middle School, Tamisha Kinard, formerly assistant principal at Brooklyn Park Middle School
  • Chesapeake Bay Middle School, Michael Dunn, formerly assistant principal at Bates Middle School
  • Freetown Elementary, Cheryl Cox, formerly assistant principal at Marley Elementary School
  • Hillsmere Elementary, Helen Mateosky, formerly school performance coach at Annapolis Middle School
  • Mills-Parole Elementary, Sue Myers, formerly principal at Annapolis Elementary School
  • Phoenix Academy, John Thompson, formerly assistant principal at Phoenix Annapolis School
  • Point Pleasant Elementary, Karen Markovic, formerly principal at Glendale Elementary School
  • Ridgeway Elementary, Lisa Koennel, formerly principal at Point Pleasant Elementary School
  • Riviera Beach Elementary, Tracy Prater, formerly assistant principal at Sunset Elementary School
  • Severn River Middle School, Maisha Gillins, formerly principal at Brooklyn Park Middle School
  • Solley Elementary, Jeff Haynie, formerly principal at Freetown Elementary School
