BOARD OF EDUCATION TO ADOPT FINAL FY2014 OPERATING, CAPITAL BUDGETS AT JUNE 19, 2013, MEETING

The Board of Education of Anne Arundel County is scheduled to discuss and adopt final Fiscal Year 2014 operating and capital budgets at its next meeting, scheduled for Wednesday, June 19, 2013. The meeting will be held in the Board Room at the Parham Building, located at 2644 Riva Road in Annapolis.

On June 4, 2013, the County Council approved $1.04 billion operating and $136.8 million capital budgets for the school system in the coming fiscal year, which begins July 1, 2013. While the Board has no authority to alter the capital budget, which contains school construction and maintenance funding, it can reallocate funding in the operating budget, which the County Council approves within defined state categories. The Board will consider reallocating funds in order to address requests not funded by the County Council.

The operating budget approved by the Council contains funding to cover 2 percent compensation increases for employees, 31 positions to staff the new Phoenix Academy, 15 special education positions, and four positions to support the Sojourner-Douglass College program for Annapolis High School students. It also funds the launch of AACPS’ first middle school STEM magnet program at Old Mill Middle School South and expansion of the AVID program at Corkran Middle School.

At the meeting, the Board will also vote on negotiated agreements with all four of AACPS’ employee bargaining units.

The meeting will be the last for student Board member Nick Lefavor, whose one-year term expires on June 30, 2013.

The Board will meet at 8:30 a.m. to vote to go into closed session, during which time it will discuss confidential matters as permitted by the Maryland Open Meetings Act including, but not limited to, legal advice, personnel, and negotiations. Closed session is not open to the public. The general session of the meeting, which is open to the public, starts at 10 a.m.

A complete agenda for the meeting accompanies this news release. More information on agenda items can be found on the AACPS Web site, www.aacps.org, in the Board Docs section under the Board of Education tab.

The general session of Wednesday’s Board meeting will be broadcast live on AACPS-TV, which can be found on Channel 96 on Comcast and Broadstripe, and Channel 36 on Verizon. Rebroadcasts are scheduled for 6:00 p.m. the day after the meeting and 2:00 p.m. on subsequent Sundays.
