STATE BOARD APPROVES CALENDAR WAIVER ALLOWING SOUTHERN MIDDLE SCHOOL TO CLOSE ONE DAY EARLY

The Maryland State Board of Education has granted Anne Arundel County Public Schools’ request for a waiver of the 180-day school calendar requirement for Southern Middle School, allowing for the last day of class for students to occur on Thursday, June 13, 2013. The early closing is necessary to help facilitate the move of Lothian Elementary School into space at Southern Middle while the new Lothian Elementary is constructed over the next two years.

Southern joins eight other schools with similar early closings. They are: Annapolis High School; Central and Severn River middle schools; Phoenix Academy; and Crofton, Lothian, Mills-Parole, and Point Pleasant elementary schools.

The last day of classes at other schools across the county is scheduled for Friday, June 14, 2013.

Parents and employees should also note the following key dates in place with the revised calendar:

● The last day of school for graduating seniors is Thursday, May 30, 2013.

● The last day of class at the two Centers for Applied Technology is Monday, June 10, 2013.
