BOARD OF EDUCATION TO ELECT OFFICERS, FILL VACANCIES ON CITIZEN ADVISORY COMMITTEE AT JULY 11, 2018, MEETING

The Board of Education of Anne Arundel County will elect officers for the 2018-2019 school year and fill 13 vacancies on its Citizen Advisory Committee (CAC) at its next meeting, scheduled for 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 11, 2018. The meeting will be held in the Board Room at the Parham Building, located at 2644 Riva Road in Annapolis.

The 30-member CAC provides input and advice on specific issues surrounding education throughout the county. The panel consists of two representatives from each of the 12 high school clusters, one representing elementary schools and one representing secondary schools; two at-large representatives; a military representative; and three representatives appointed by other parent groups in the county. Members serve two-year terms with an option for a third year if they so desire and are approved by the Board.

CHANGES IN BOARD MEETING PROCEDURES

To increase transparency and efficiency, the Board will enact two changes to its procedures beginning with Wednesday’s meeting:

  • Apart from approval of the minutes, establishment of the agenda order, and adjournment of the meeting, votes on motions will be conducted by roll call instead of a show of hands. Board members will be asked individually for their vote on agenda items.
  • Those wishing to offer comment during the Public Comment portion of the meeting (for items not appearing on the agenda) must fill out cards prior to the Board establishing the agenda order in the early portion of its meeting. Those arriving after the agenda order has been approved, or who do not fill out cards to speak during the Public Comment portion, may submit written testimony to the Board. Written testimony is also accepted at any time. Testimony on agenda items will continue to be heard when those items are before the Board. While those wishing to testify on agenda items must still fill out cards, an invitation to the audience will be made for these items.

Wednesday’s meeting will be held in the Board Room at the Parham Building, 2644 Riva Road, Annapolis. The Board will meet in a public session at 8:00 a.m. for the sole purpose of voting to immediately go into closed session, during which time it will discuss confidential matters as permitted by the Maryland Open Meetings Act including, but not limited to, legal advice, personnel, and negotiations. Closed session is not open to the public. The public session of the meeting will resume at 10 a.m.

A complete agenda for the meeting accompanies this news release. More information on agenda items will be posted on the AACPS website in the Board Docs section under the Board of Education tab.

The general session of Wednesday’s Board meeting will be broadcast live on AACPS-TV, which can be found on Channel 96 on Comcast and Broadstripe, and Channel 36 on Verizon. High definition broadcasts can be seen on Channel 996 on Comcast, Channel 496 on Broadstripe, and Channel 1961 on Verizon. Rebroadcasts are scheduled for 7:00 p.m. the day after the meeting and 2:00 p.m. on subsequent Sundays.
