BOARD TO VOTE ON CHANGES TO QUARTERLY ASSESSMENTS POLICY; DISCUSS ITEMS OF LEGISLATION

The Board of Education will conduct its third review and vote on an updated policy regarding administration of quarterly assessments at its next meeting, scheduled for 7 p.m. on Wednesday, January 24, 2018. The meeting will be held in the Board Room at the Parham Building, located at 2644 Riva Road in Annapolis.

The policy and its accompanying administrative regulation outline procedures to administer quarterly assessments to students at all grade levels. Among the proposed changes is one which would eliminate the ability of high school underclassmen who are taking Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate exams to opt out of taking the quarterly assessment in the fourth marking period. That change would take effect in the 2018-2019 school year.

The policy has been reviewed by the Board’s Policy Committee and by the entire Board at two previous meetings. It also has been posted online for a 30-day public comment period.

The Board will meet at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday to vote to go into closed session, during which time it will discuss confidential matters as permitted by the Maryland Open Meetings Act including, but not limited to, legal advice, personnel, and negotiations. Closed session is not open to the public. The general session of the meeting, which is open to the public, will begin at 7 p.m.

At the meeting, the Board will also items of legislation now before the Maryland General Assembly that could impact Anne Arundel County Public Schools.
