BOARD OF EDUCATION TO VOTE ON REDISTRICTING PLAN FOR CROFTON-AREA SCHOOLS AND RECEIVE AND UPDATE ON AACPS’ WELLNESS EFFORTS AT APRIL 3, 2013 MEETING

The Board of Education of Anne Arundel County is set to vote on the adoption of Superintendent Kevin Maxwell’s redistricting recommendation for Crofton-area schools, hear an update on AACPS’ wellness initiatives, and vote on approval of ten new courses at its next meeting, scheduled for 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 3, 2013, in the Board Room at the Parham Building, 2644 Riva Road, Annapolis.

Dr. Maxwell’s recommendation to alleviate overcrowding at Nantucket Elementary School is identical to that arrived at by a community panel made up of parents and community members that studied the available options. It calls for moving students between Nantucket, Crofton, and Crofton Meadows elementary schools and their feeder middle schools as part of a plan that would take effect in August 2014 and 2015.

The redistricting plan has been the subject of several public meetings and a public hearing. Under the Board’s timeline, a plan would have to be approved by the end of April.

Board members will also hear from AACPS officials and the students most impacted by decisions made by the system’s Wellness Committee. In addition, the Board will also discuss approval of ten new courses ranging from International Baccalaureate, to robotics, STEM, and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) curriculum.

The Board will meet at 8:30 a.m. to vote to go into closed session, during which time it will discuss confidential matters as permitted by the Maryland Open Meetings Act including, but not limited to, legal advice, personnel, and negotiations. Closed session is not open to the public. The general session of the meeting, which is open to the public, will begin at 10 a.m.

A complete agenda for the meeting accompanies this news release. More information on agenda items can be found  here.

The general session of Wednesday’s Board meeting will be broadcast live on AACPS-TV, which can be found on Channel 96 on Comcast and Broadstripe, and Channel 36 on Verizon. Rebroadcasts are scheduled for 6 p.m. the day after the meeting and 2 p.m. on subsequent Sundays.
