BOARD OF EDUCATION TO HEAR PRESENTATION ON BUS SAFETY, ADOPT POSITIONS ON GENERAL ASSEMBLY LEGISLATION

The Board of Education of Anne Arundel County will hear a presentation on the safety of school buses and adopt positions on several bills currently before the General Assembly at its next meeting, scheduled for February 1, 2017.

Anne Arundel County Public Schools transports approximately 59,000 students to and from school every day. This year, nearly 652,000 hours will be spent driving more than 700 buses over 10.1 million miles to transport students to and from schools.

At Wednesday’s meeting, AACPS staff will discuss the measures in place to help keep students safe on their journeys to and from school as well as the steps taken to certify bus drivers and aides.

Also at the meeting, the Board will consider formal positions on several education-related bills now pending in the General Assembly. Those positions will form the foundation of testimony to be submitted to legislators during hearings.

Wednesday’s meeting will be held in the Board Room at the Parham Building, 2644 Riva Road, Annapolis. The Board will meet at 8:30 a.m. to vote to go into closed session, during which time it will discuss confidential matters as permitted by the Maryland Open Meetings Act including, but not limited to, legal advice, personnel, and negotiations. Closed session is not open to the public. The general session of the meeting, which is open to the public, will begin at 10:00 a.m.

A complete agenda for the meeting accompanies this news release. More information on agenda items will be posted on the AACPS website in the Board Docs section under the Board of Education tab.
