BOARD OF EDUCATION APPROVES 2017-2018 SCHOOL YEAR CALENDAR

The Board of Education of Anne Arundel County today gave formal approval to the 2017-2018 School Year calendar that fully complies with Gov. Larry Hogan’s executive orders by starting school after Labor Day and ending classes on June 15, 2018.

The calendar approved by the Board is identical to that recommended by the school system’s Calendar Committee, a group that consists of AACPS employees, students, and representatives of employee bargaining units and parent groups.

Specifically, classes for the 2017-2018 school year will begin for students on September 5, 2017, (the day after Labor Day) and are scheduled to conclude on June 15, 2018.

To accomplish this, the following significant changes were made to the calendar as compared to the current year:

  • The Easter/Spring Break has been reduced to three days (March 29, 2018, through April 2, 2018). State law requires schools to be closed on Good Friday (March 30, 2018), and Easter Monday (April 2, 2018).
  • The number of days built into the calendar for inclement weather closings has been reduced from five to three.

The calendar also provides that should more than three days be needed for inclement weather closings, Anne Arundel County Public Schools would seek a waiver from the Maryland State Department of Education to open schools for students on April 2, 2018.

The draft calendar also maintains the three-day Thanksgiving break put in place this year, as well as three days of parent-teacher conferences, one in each of the first three marking periods.
