BOARD OF EDUCATION TO RE-EXAMINE REDISTRICTING OPTIONS IN ANNAPOLIS AREA

The Board of Education is taking another look at potential ways to best utilize elementary school space in the Annapolis cluster, and is asking Superintendent George Arlotto to present some options early next year.

At its July 13, 2016, meeting, the Board asked Dr. Arlotto to work outside the school system’s stipulated redistricting timeline to consider options to redistrict the nine elementary schools in the Annapolis cluster. The process would also take into account projected enrollment at the Monarch Annapolis Public Contract School, which is scheduled to open in the fall of 2017.

The elementary schools in the Annapolis cluster are Annapolis, Eastport, Georgetown East, Germantown, Hillsmere, Walter S. Mills-Parole, Rolling Knolls, Tyler Heights, and West Annapolis.

The Board asked Dr. Arlotto to present one or more recommendations at its February 1, 2017, meeting. The Board would then consider those options and perhaps some of its own before deciding which, if any, options to take to public hearing. A final decision would be made by April 30, 2017.

Dr. Arlotto said he plans to put together a committee with representatives from the nine elementary schools as well as Annapolis and Bates middle schools after school resumes in the fall.

During the 2014-2015 school year, the Board considered several options to redistrict Annapolis cluster schools. It did not approve any of the options at that time, preferring instead to await the completion of area school renovation projects and the new comprehensive school facilities (MGT) study before revisiting the issue.
