BOARD OF EDUCATION GIVES FORMAL APPROVAL TO 2016-2017 SCHOOL YEAR CALENDAR

The Board of Education of Anne Arundel County tonight approved a calendar for the 2016-2017 school year that will see the first students arrive for class on Monday, August 22, 2016, two calendar days earlier than in the current school year, and the last students leave class on Wednesday, June 14, 2017, three calendar days earlier than this year.

Approved by a 9-0 vote, the 2016-2017 calendar builds in five days for inclement weather closings and stipulates that Easter Monday (April 17, 2017) would be used as a makeup day if needed. Any additional needed makeup days would be added to the end of the school year. A lack of inclement weather closings could result in schools dismissing on June 7, 2017 – 10 calendar days earlier than in the current school year.

The Board did not take a vote on a tentative calendar for the 2017-2018 school year. It will do so at a later date.

The Board modified the calendar proposed by the school system’s Calendar Committee to begin the school year one day earlier, end the school year one day later, maintain the weeklong Easter/Spring break, and have students attend class on the Jewish holiday of Rosh Hashanah.

As proposed by the Calendar Committee, the calendar also shortens the Thanksgiving break by two days, meaning students will attend class on the Monday and Tuesday preceding Thanksgiving. It also places single days for parent-teacher conferences in each of the first three marking periods and reallocates exam days to accommodate the school system’s move to quarterly assessments.

The calendar will be posted on the school system’s website, www.aacps.org.
