BOARD OF EDUCATION TO HEAR ABOUT PROGRESS IN EFFORTS TO CLOSE ACHIEVEMENT GAP

The Board of Education of Anne Arundel County will hear a presentation about efforts developed by school system offices over the last year to help close disparities between student groups at its next meeting, scheduled for 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 8, 2015. The meeting will be held in the Board Room at the Parham Building, located at 2644 Riva Road in Annapolis.

A year ago, the school system’s Office of Equity and Accelerated Student Achievement was charged with developing a plan to better align and focus resources with regard to Anne Arundel County Public Schools’ efforts to eliminate disparities among student groups. At Wednesday’s meeting, members of that office and other departments which have been key partners in those efforts will share with the Board information about some of the initiatives, approaches, and programs that have been implemented over the last year, as well as the impact they have had on students and schools across the system.

Also at the meeting, the Board will elect its officers for the 2015-2016 school year, and appoint members to 12 vacant positions on its Citizen Advisory Committee.

The meeting will also be the first for new student member Jacob Horstkamp, a rising senior at North County High School. Horstkamp is the 42nd student member of the Board, and the only student on a local board in the nation with full voting rights.

The Board will meet on Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. to vote to go into closed session, during which time it will discuss confidential matters as permitted by the Maryland Open Meetings Act including, but not limited to, legal advice, personnel, and negotiations. Closed session is not open to the public. The general session of the meeting, which is open to the public, will begin at 10 a.m.

A complete agenda for the meeting accompanies this news release. More information on agenda items will be posted on the AACPS website in the Board Docs section under the Board of Education tab.

The general session of Wednesday’s Board meeting will be broadcast live on AACPS-TV, which can be found on Channel 96 on Comcast and Broadstripe, and Channel 36 on Verizon. High definition broadcasts can be seen on Channel 996 on Comcast and Channel 496 on Broadstripe. Rebroadcasts are scheduled for 7:00 p.m. the day after the meeting and 2:00 p.m. on subsequent Sundays.
