BOARD OF EDUCATION TO RECEIVE UPDATE ON READINESS OF SCHOOLS FOR 2014-2015 SCHOOL YEAR

The Board of Education of Anne Arundel County will hear an update on the readiness of schools for the 2014-2015 school year at its next meeting, scheduled for Wednesday, August 20, 2014. The meeting will be held in the Board Room at the Parham Building, located at 2644 Riva Road in Annapolis.

The update will include information from the offices of School Performance, Curriculum & Instruction, Advanced Studies & Programs, Student Support Services, and Human Resources.

The 2014-2015 school year starts on Monday, August 25, with students in first through fifth, sixth, and ninth grades beginning classes. More than 79,200 students are projected to attend AACPS schools in the coming school year.

Students at eight schools – Annapolis High School; Magothy River and Severn River middle schools; and Annapolis, Benfield, Crofton, Mills-Parole, and West Annapolis elementary schools – will begin the school year one day later than other students because of construction projects at their schools.

Also at the meeting, Anthony Alston, Executive Director of the Office of Equity and Accelerated Student Achievement, will share with the Board information about the retooling of the office as well as the new structures that have been created to help eliminate achievement and discipline gaps across the system. The presentation will include a discussion of current school-based and community outreach efforts, plans for the upcoming school year, and ways in which the office’s staff will collaborate with other school system departments to support schools in elevating all students and eliminating all gaps.

The Board will meet at 8:30 a.m. to vote to go into closed session, during which time it will discuss confidential matters as permitted by the Maryland Open Meetings Act including, but not limited to, legal advice, personnel, and negotiations. Closed session is not open to the public. The general session of the meeting, which is open to the public, starts at 10 a.m.

A complete agenda for the meeting accompanies this news release. More information on agenda items can be found on the AACPS Web site, www.aacps.org, in the Board Docs section under the Board of Education tab.

The general session of Wednesday’s Board meeting will be broadcast live on AACPS-TV, which can be found on Channel 96 on Comcast and Broadstripe, and Channel 36 on Verizon. Rebroadcasts are scheduled for 7:00 p.m. the day after the meeting and 2:00 p.m. on subsequent Sundays.
