BOARD OF EDUCATION TO ADOPT FINAL FY2015 OPERATING, CAPITAL BUDGETS AT JUNE 18, 2014, MEETING

The Board of Education of Anne Arundel County is scheduled to discuss and adopt final Fiscal Year 2015 operating and capital budgets at its next meeting, scheduled for Wednesday, June 18, 2014. The meeting will be held in the Board Room at the Parham Building, located at 2644 Riva Road in Annapolis.

On June 6, 2014, the County Council approved $1.02 billion operating and $164 million capital budgets for the school system in the coming fiscal year, which begins July 1, 2014. While the Board has no authority to alter the capital budget, which contains school construction and maintenance funding, it can reallocate funding in the operating budget, which the County Council approves within defined state categories. The Board will consider reallocating funds in order to address requests not funded by the County Council.

The operating budget approved by the Council contains funding for compensation increases for all school system employees. It also funds 7.5 teaching positions for the BioMedical Allied Health magnet program at Glen Burnie High School, the Performing and Visual Arts magnet program at Annapolis and Broadneck high schools, and the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) magnet program at Old Mill Middle School South.

The budget also funds seven positions to assist English Language Learners, and three bilingual facilitator positions to assist families with educational issues, processes, and concerns.

The capital budget funds construction projects at Annapolis, Lothian, Crofton, Mills-Parole, Rolling Knolls, Benfield, and West Annapolis elementary schools, as well as Severna Park High School. It also funds feasibility studies for Manor View and High Point elementary schools.

The Board will meet at 8:30 a.m. to vote to go into closed session, during which time it will discuss confidential matters as permitted by the Maryland Open Meetings Act including, but not limited to, legal advice, personnel, and negotiations. Closed session is not open to the public. The general session of the meeting, which is open to the public, starts at 10 a.m.

A complete agenda for the meeting accompanies this news release. More information on agenda items can be found on the AACPS Web site, www.aacps.org, in the Board Docs section under the Board of Education tab.

The general session of Wednesday’s Board meeting will be broadcast live on AACPS-TV, which can be found on Channel 96 on Comcast and Broadstripe, and Channel 36 on Verizon. Rebroadcasts are scheduled for 7:00 p.m. the day after the meeting and 2:00 p.m. on subsequent Sundays.
