BOARD TO GET FIRST LOOK AT NEW STUDENT DISCIPLINE POLICIES AND REGULATIONS, VOTE ON CONTRACT FOR INCOMING SUPERINTENDENT

The Board of Education will get its first look at revisions to the policies and accompanying regulations regarding student discipline at its next meeting, scheduled for 10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 4, 2014. The meeting will be held in the Board Room at the Parham Building, located at 2644 Riva Road in Annapolis.

The policies and regulations are aligned with the State Board’s newly revised policies and regulations, and aim to keep students in school and engaged in the learning environment. They are designed to reduce the number of long-term out-of-school suspensions for non-violent incidents, eliminate disproportionate suspensions of minority students and students with disabilities, and ensure that all students receive appropriate educational services during suspensions or expulsion within identified timelines for the disciplinary process.

After the Board reviews the items at Wednesday’s meeting, public comment will be accepted online here.

At Wednesday’s meeting, the Board will also vote on approval of a contract for incoming Superintendent Dr. George Arlotto. Upon approval of the contract, Dr. Arlotto will take over as superintendent on July 1, 2014.

The Board is also scheduled to discuss and vote on a renewal of the charter for Monarch Academy Public Charter School in Glen Burnie. It will also vote on educational specifications and schematic design documents for kindergarten additions at Eastport, Georgetown East, and Park elementary schools and the West Meade Early Education Center, as well as open space enclosures at Glen Burnie High School.

The Board will meet at 8:30 a.m. to vote to go into closed session, during which time it will discuss confidential matters as permitted by the Maryland Open Meetings Act including, but not limited to, legal advice, personnel, and negotiations. Closed session is not open to the public. The general session of the meeting, which is open to the public, will begin at 10 a.m.

A complete agenda for the meeting accompanies this news release. More information on agenda items will be posted on the AACPS website, in the Board Docs section under the Board of Education tab.

The general session of Wednesday’s Board meeting will be broadcast live on AACPS-TV, which can be found on Channel 96 on Comcast and Broadstripe, and Channel 36 on Verizon. Rebroadcasts are scheduled for 7:00 p.m. the day after the meeting and 2:00 p.m. on subsequent Sundays.
