BOARD OF EDUCATION TO DISCUSS CHANGES IN SCHOOL MEAL PRICES AT MAY 21, 2014, MEETING

The Board of Education of Anne Arundel County will consider a recommendation from Interim Superintendent Mamie J. Perkins to increase school meal prices for the first time in four years at its next meeting, scheduled for Wednesday, May 21, 2014, in Annapolis. The meeting will be held in the Board Room at the Parham Building, located at 2644 Riva Road in Annapolis.

Mrs. Perkins’ recommendation calls for school breakfast and lunch to increase by 15 cents next year. If the change is approved, full-price breakfast at all levels would cost $1.50, elementary school lunches would cost $2.75, and secondary school lunches would cost $3.00. The price of milk would remain at 55 cents.

The school system’s Division of Food and Nutrition Services receives no county funding, and instead relies on revenue from federal reimbursements (51 percent), food sales (46 percent), and state funding (3 percent) to operate. School meal prices were last increased in the 2010-2011 school year.

The Board will meet at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday to vote to go into closed session, during which time it will discuss confidential matters as permitted by the Maryland Open Meetings Act including, but not limited to, legal advice, personnel, and negotiations. Closed session is not open to the public. The general session of the meeting, which is open to the public, will begin at 7 p.m.

A complete agenda for the meeting accompanies this news release. More information on agenda items will be posted on the AACPS Web site, www.aacps.org, in the Board Docs section under the Board of Education tab.

The general session of Wednesday’s Board meeting will be broadcast live on AACPS-TV, which can be found on Channel 96 on Comcast and Broadstripe, and Channel 36 on Verizon. Rebroadcasts are scheduled for 7:00 p.m. the day after the meeting and 2:00 p.m. on subsequent Sundays.
