Read Across America Read-A-Thon

We are an AACPS: Volunteer Program, Linthicum Elementary School

Many schools have programs that encourage reading. Mrs. Parks, a volunteer at Linthicum Elementary School, chose to build interest in a different way. She instituted a read-a-thon. Just like a walk-a-thon, this program raises money based on how much each entrant reads. In this case, each minute spent reading translated into miles. These miles were not only tracked on a world map, they added up to money raised for the school. This program has been in place for four years. In that time, it has raised over eighteen thousand dollars. Of course, it has also helped to support the cause of literacy. The Read-a-Thon is now one of the biggest, most successful school wide events at Linthicum Elementary.

In 2018, the Linthicum Elementary’s Read-a-Thon was recognized as an Exemplary Volunteer Program for their efforts to encourage literacy.
