I am an AACPS: Teacher, Folger McKinsey Elementary School | 2018 Teacher of the year Semi-Finalist

All children are unique and possess individualized strengths that help them find success in the classroom. My strong belief is that we must put forth the effort to uncover the talents that can be found in every child. The most effective way to do this is to truly get to know the children–their likes, dislikes, fears, hobbies, and in some cases the personal circumstances at home that can affect learning in the classroom.

Since beginning my teaching career 11 years ago, I have grown more by adapting this philosophy of teaching as a pillar of success. I’ve learned that to truly get to know a child I must exude behavior that is both collaborative and inclusive with not only the student, but with all key stakeholders in each child’s life. This means building relationships with parents, caregivers, other teachers, and the community in a quest to understand the children I teach.

The strong relationships I create with each of my students allow them to experience the passion and commitment I have for their success.  My students are aware that I am fully committed to their success, not only in the classroom, but their success throughout a lifetime.

Genuinely taking time to get to know my students and those who have an invested interest in their success has proven to be the foundation of my success as a teacher. My hope is that this philosophy will continue to promote learning in my classroom and build confidence in my students that they will carry with them on their lifelong learning journey.
