Alexandra J., Grade 12

I am an AACPS: Student, Chesapeake High School

When I volunteered for the AACPS Global Languages Summer Center, I was unsure if I could make a difference. My goal was not only to volunteer for the teachers and students of this program, but also to connect to others in a meaningful way. For two weeks, I watched a group of children become immersed in their language of choice, and connect to the people around them. As someone who is quite shy, I also watched myself connect to others through learning a language, and for me that language was Spanish. Through an array of lessons and activities, these kids were able to break from their comfort zone and learn something new. I cannot thank the teachers, students, and administration enough for this amazing opportunity I received, and I will miss it. Nothing brings me more joy than our youth connecting with each other, especially in foreign languages. I hope this experience translates into a positive outlook for them this school year, as it did for me.
